Actifio Inc. Protection and Availability Storage (PAS) platform
The Actifio Protection and Availability Storage platform uses virtualization to copy, store, move and restore data. Its Virtual Data Pipeline is based on a distributed object file system that creates virtual copies of point-in-time data from a collection of unique blocks of data. It takes one copy of the data and makes multiple applications believe they have their own unique copies. Actifio claims PAS eliminates redundant silos of data while providing a single virtualized platform that can be used by any application.
EMC Corp. Data Domain Archiver (DD Archiver)
The EMC Data Domain Archiver is designed for long-term retention of backup data and data archiving. EMC has taken a midrange Data Domain system and added a large-capacity tier for static data. Data is initially stored in the active tier, which operates similarly to a Data Domain system for backup, and then aged data is moved to a large archive storage tier based on user-defined policies.
ExaGrid Systems Inc. EX13000E
The ExaGrid EX13000E disk backup system uses a grid design that can combine 10 servers to store 130 TB of data. It offers instant virtual machine (VM) recovery where the most recent VM backups in original form are maintained so users can recover entire virtual machines directly from the ExaGrid backup system if the primary VM is down. Each EX13000E has 16 2 TB disks, 16 GB of memory and two CPUs in a 19-inch rackmount chassis.
Hewlett-Packard (HP) Co. StoreOnce D2D4324 Backup System
The HP StoreOnce D2D4324 Backup System is a high-end backup appliance that includes data deduplication. It does fine-grain, variable chunk-size deduplication that detects small changes in data for higher deduplication efficiency. The single appliance supports iSCSI and 8 GB Fibre Channel (FC) for VTLs, Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) and 10 GbE for network-attached storage (NAS), and Symantec OpenStack (OST) for data center consolidation. The backup hardware offers simultaneous support for VTL and NAS backup.
Quantum Corp. DXi6701 and DXi6702
The Quantum DXi6700 family is a high-performance disk backup system that has deduplication and replication for NAS and Fibre Channel environments. It’s built on the company’s DXI Accent 2.0 software to distribute deduplication between backup servers and the appliance. Each backup hardware appliance scales from 8 TB to 80 TB of capacity in a single system.
Quantum vmPRO 4000 appliance
The vmPRO 4000 appliance is based on the Pancetera software that Quantum purchased in 2011 for $12 million. It’s a backup and dedupe appliance that consolidates backup for virtual and physical machines in midrange and large data centers. The software works with the company’s DXi appliances to accelerate backup. The vmPRO comes in two models: the vmPRO 4510 with 2 TB of usable capacity, and the vmPRO 4601 that scales from 4 TB to 12 TB by activating a license key.
Riverbed Technology Inc. Whitewater cloud storage gateway
The Whitewater cloud storage gateway is designed for backup to the public cloud. The front end supports CIFS and NFS interfaces, while the back end supports APIs of all major cloud providers, including Amazon, Microsoft Azure, Nirvanix and Rackspace. Whitewater performs data deduplication and optimizes wide-area network (WAN) transmissions to the cloud.
Sepaton Inc. S2100-ES2 Series 2910 with Version 6.0 software
The Sepaton S2100-ES2 2910 is a disk-based backup system that scales in performance and capacity via a grid architecture. The company claims it has a 43.2 TB per hour performance. Each 2U node has two processors, four 4 Gbps Fibre Channel ports, two 10 GbE ports and 48 GB of RAM.
Sepaton S2100-DS3 Series 2000 with Version 6.0 software
The Sepaton S2100-DS3 Series 2000 is targeted at data protection for large enterprises with multiple remote locations. Each DS3 provides up to 192 virtual devices. The company claims the DS3 can back up 5.4 TB per hour.
Symantec Corp. NetBackup 5220 appliance
Symantec NetBackup 5220 is a backup appliance that does deduplication in physical and virtual environments at the source, target, inline and post-processing. Each appliance can be deployed in a data center or remote office, starting with 4 TB of usable capacity and scaling up to 32 TB of deduplication capacity. It includes Symantec’s V-Ray technology that provides a view of virtual and physical servers.
