Quantum releases StorNext 4.0 data management software
Quantum Corp. released new data management software, StorNext 4.0, which provides high-speed data sharing and management capabilities to data storage environments. New features in StorNext 4.0 include file system data deduplication, data replication, data tiering, timecode-based partial file retrieval and a Web services-based management console. These new features are designed for enterprises with a high rate of data growth and will be available in February.

FalconStor releases FDS 2.0, taking LAN-based dedupe to next level
FalconStor Software Inc. released the File-interface Deduplication System (FDS) 2.0. FalconStor FDS 2.0 takes LAN-based data deduplication to a higher level of functionality with high availability. It's designed for both small-to medium-sized businesses (SMBs) and large enterprises who need to reduce their data storage space.
Some of the main features of FalconStor FDS include: support for Symantec OpenStorage (OST), increased fan-in ratio of 150:1 to enhance global data deduplication, a data replication dashboard for real-time status monitoring, integrity checking and collision avoidance to prevent data loss. FalconStor FDS 2.0 will be available at the end of February.
Synology releases DiskStation Manager 2.3 with cloud backup features
Synology Inc. announced the release of DiskStation Manager (DSM) 2.3, which includes data backup features such as cloud backup with Amazon S3. DSM 2.3 comes with Synology Hyprid RAID, which simplifies RAID setup by optimizing disk capacities. It also comes with Synology Volume Manager, which is a wizard that allows you to have your volumes maximized across DiskStation. Additional features include the AES 256-bit shared folder encryption for data security. The DSM 2.3 is available now for a free download for users who own a DiskStation 7 series and upward.
Knoll Ontrack launches Ontrack Compass, an email and file archiving product
Knoll Ontrack announced the release of Ontrack Compass, a new data storage enterprise email and file archiving product. Ontrack Compass was specifically designed to allow legal and IT teams to quickly prepare and respond to litigation, investigations and regulatory requirements. With Ontrack Compass, users can get easily get rid of irrelevant data, reducing the risk of retaining data that's not needed. Furthermore, the product has both compression and data deduplication technology, minimizing an organization's data footprint.
Spectra Logic's nTierv80 dedupe appliance gets high review
Spectra Logic announced that its nTierv80 data deduplication appliance got high marks in a review and analysis by OpenBench Labs. OpenBench Labs said that Spectra Logic's nTierv80 dedupe appliance was well received because of its ability to easily protect data operations of virtual tape libraries (VTLs) to physical tape libraries. Other features of the nTierv80 deduplication appliance include: thin provisioning of virtual tape cartridges and post-processing deduplication.
Quantum DXi-Series qualified to be combined with Symantec Backup Exec 2010
Quantum announced that its DXi-Series, a disk backup and data deduplication appliance, is qualified to be combined with Symantec Backup Exec 2010. The combination will establish a single point of control across sites and data storage tiers.
Atempo expands capabilities of Atempo Time Navigator, their data backup and recovery product
Atempo Inc. announced that it has enhanced its data deduplication capabilities and added virtualization support for its data backup and recovery product, Atempo Time Navigator. The new deduplication capabilities include block-level deduplication and more movement in deduplicated backup data sent from disk to tape. The new virtualization software comes with vSphere support as well as Microsoft Hyper-V and Cirtix Xen agents that are capable of delivering full virtual machine (VM) data backups and restorations.
Applico launches data backup application for mobile devices
Applico, a mobile application developer, launched Aurkon, a free mobile application that provides automatic and wireless data backup for BlackBerry users. With Aurkon, users do not have to plug their BlackBerry into a computer to back up their data, but rather, just need to download the data backup application.
