LTO Program expands LTO roadmap through Generation 8
The Linear Tape-Open (LTO) Program technology provider companies announced the expansion of their product roadmap to include generations 7 and 8. Features of the new LTO tape technologies will include capacities of 6.4 TB and 12.8 TB, respectively. Tape drive transfer rates will also increase up to 315 MBps for generation 7 and 472 MBps for generation 8.
More information on the expansion of the LTO Program will be released later this year.

Fast-teks Inc. and Gillware Data Services teamed up to form a new remote data backup product, Gillware Remote Backup technology. This new data backup product works to protect mission-critical data from permanent loss. Users can back up their data remotely using protected Internet connections.
Nine Technology releases online backup and recovery software for laptops and PCs
Nine Technology released Powered by Nine ONE, an online data backup and recovery software product for laptop and desktop computers. Powered by Nine allows managed service providers (MSPs) to deliver secure online backup and recovery services to desktops, laptops and servers for individuals or small organizations. Other features of this software include: data protection, global data deduplication and data compression, fast and secure access by customers and an administration and management console.
Powered by Nine ONE will be available at the beginning of May.
Think Tank relies on Unitrends for data backup and archiving
Unitrends announced that Think Tank Network Technology Group relies on Unitrends for data backups and data archiving. Prior to using Unitrends, Think Tank relied on tape backups for data protection and recovery. They chose to switch to Unitrends because they offered disk-to-disk offsite data backups, and now uses their services to protect their Windows, Linux, AIX, Mac and GroupWise systems.
VOSI.biz releases new cloud-based version of their offsite data backup software
VOSI.biz released a new cloud-based version of their offsite data backup software, VOSI.biz Online Backup 2.0. With VOSI.biz Online Backup 2.0, users can back up their data to VOSI.biz's collocation facility. It backs up PCs, laptops and servers, and can be installed on an unlimited number of computers at no extra charge.
Other features of VOSI.biz Online Backup 2.0 include: Scheduled daily or weekly backups, incremental backups, ability to back up multiple computers with one account, file restores through website or client software, backup for removable disks and network folders, ability to migrate backup tasks from PC to PC and support for Windows 7 and 2008.
NorthScale teams up with Heroku in cloud-based technology
NorthScale Inc. announced that it will be teaming up with cloud platform provider, Heroku. NorthScale's Memcached server will be available as an infrastructure service in Heroku's catalog of cloud-based backup add-ons. The NorthScale Memcached server is a caching technology that provides scalability of dynamic Web applications. It also provides a foundation for scale-out requirements in public and private cloud computing environments.
Mezeo Software and Zmanda announce new cloud storage backup product
Mezeo Software and Zmanda announced they are teaming up to offer a new cloud storage backup product, Zmanda Cloud Backup Enabled by Mezeo. The new cloud backup product enables is a Windows-based cloud backup product that allows users to back up files and their entire Windows environment to a public or private storage cloud. Other features of Zmanda Cloud Backup Enabled by Mezeo include 4096-bit encryption for data at rest, and a Secure Socket Layer (SSL) encryption for data in motion.
