Commvault IntelliSnap replaces NetApp SnapProtect.
"It's an evolutionary step," said Ralph Nimergood, vice president of worldwide channels and alliances for Commvault. According to the data protection vendor, IntelliSnap simplifies snapshot management of NetApp storage arrays across all business-critical applications, enabling full application recovery while eliminating the need for complex scripts and manual processes.
According to NetApp, the product helps customers transition to the hybrid cloud by protecting data on premises and in the cloud.
With SnapProtect, NetApp took the first support call and would transfer to Commvault if needed. Now, Commvault gets the first call.
"We think we can make the support even better," Nimergood said.
NetApp sells the product, which has been shipping for about a month. For customers with SnapProtect, Commvault offers a full migration path to IntelliSnap and there is no fee to convert.
Enterprise data storage provider Infinidat also forged a Commvault IntelliSnap collaboration.
IntelliSnap now supports InfiniBox's snapshot capability through Commvault's recently upgraded software portfolio and open data platform, which debuted in October.
InfiniBox can take snapshots, provide them to IntelliSnap to deliver to the backup application and manage where they go, keeping data consistent and available to customers, said Gareth Taube, vice president of marketing at Infinidat.
"This makes it easy for [Commvault customers] to integrate InfiniBox in their environment," Taube said.
IntelliSnap helps coordinate the InfiniBox snapshot process with native applications, hypervisors and file systems to ensure they are written consistently when the snapshot is created, according to Infinidat. Any supported application, hypervisor or file system running on InfiniBox will have consistent and indexed snapshots of all files, databases or virtual machines for instant recovery inside the InfiniBox array.
Infinidat came through the Commvault IntelliSnap Connect Program to plug into its open API framework, allowing Commvault to orchestrate snapshots, according to Nimergood. This offering is also available now.
