Online backup service provider AmeriVault Inc. has been acquired by privately held healthcare IT services company PHNS for an undisclosed amount.

PHNS offers information technology, health information management and patient accounting/business office services exclusively to hospitals and multifacility healthcare systems, according to the company website. PHNS claims 425 customers.

According to an AmeriVault announcement, "AmeriVault will operate as a PHNS subsidiary together with PHNS' Network Technology Group subsidiary (NTG), which also provides electronic data protection services, as well as advanced data center information technology services." AmeriVault's employees will be offered positions with PHNS, with president Bud Stoddard remaining in his present job. AmeriVault and NTG combined have more than 1,270 customers.

AmeriVault uses software from Asigra to offer its service, with its value-add coming from management of the back-end infrastructure for such services as tiered online storage and replication to a secondary disaster recovery site. "AmeriVault is one of the few online backup service providers that replicates client data to an alternate data center," said senior analyst Stephanie Balaouras, Forrester Research.

With regard to this acquisition, Balaouras said, "I hope [PHNS] doesn't narrowly focus them on healthcare. Healthcare is a big opportunity but small and medium businesses in general need good alternatives for disaster recovery."

According to PHNS director of marketing Scott Bush in an email to SearchStorage.com, AmeriVault "will remain a service provider to technology, financial services, legal, healthcare and any other organization that can benefit from automating off-site backups."
