EMC World: EMC to use WysDM as framework for backup portfolio |

At EMC World this week, EMC laid out its plans for WysDM, the backup reporting vendor it acquired after years of selling the company's software through an OEM arrangement.
According to Mark Sorenson, senior vice president of EMC's information management software group, EMC plans to use the backup reporting software as a management framework for its many backup and replication products. EMC plans to keep those products separate, saying that they all fit specific use cases.
Rob Emsley, information management software director of marketing, said backup and media capacity forecasting will be added to WysDM's Backup Advisor. Another feature slated for Backup Advisor is the ability to calculate recovery point objectives (RPO) and recovery time objectives (RTO) for different clients based on how they're backed up or replicated.
On the hardware side, Sorenson said, EMC is continuing to develop a backup, archive and replication appliance, which was previewed at a customer event last year. "We're trying to provide a unified storage backend that can take on multiple personalities," he said. "We can use virtual appliances [on that platform] like the Avamar Virtual Edition, as well."
Analyst Andrew Reichman, Forrester Research, said that if these plans come to fruition, it would fill a significant gap in the backup market. "Today people only deal with that stuff in vague terms," he said. "It would be a hard thing [for EMC] to do, but one that would be extremely valuable."
