a>, storage management tools and storage networking equipment.

Products were judged by a panel of storage users, industry analysts, consultants, and Storage magazine and TechTarget Storage Media Group editors. Judges rated the products on six criteria: innovation, performance, ease of integration into environment, ease of use and manageability, functionality and value. Each judge's ratings were then added up separately, and we aggregated them with those of the other judges to come up with a numerical score for each product. The numerical scores coupled with empirical data from our panel of judges produced the winners.

Below are the winners in the data backup and disaster recovery hardware and software categories.

Backup and disaster recovery hardware:

Gold: ExaGrid System's EX10000E

ExaGrid incorporated scale-out network-attached storage (NAS) management for storage and data deduplication in its EX10000E. The EX10000E also offers global data deduplication and the choice of post-process and concurrent data deduplication, depending on a customer's specific needs. Customers also have the option of configuring the data to send it to tape or to replicate it offsite before deduplication begins.

Silver: Axxana Phoenix System RP

The Axxana Phoenix System RP product offers synchronous replication over an asynchronous infrastructure. This data replication software is beneficial in a disaster recovery situation because it blends together synchronous and asynchronous data protection. If a disaster occurs, the Phoenix System RP will send uncommitted changes to the secondary site location. Plus, it's encased in a hard black box, which protects the system from any physical damage.

Bronze: EMC Corp./Data Domain's DD880 Enterprise Deduplication Storage System

EMC's Data Domain DD880 is a quad-socket quad-core processor system with increased CPU power that aggregates throughput up to 5.4 TB per hour. The DD880 was a big upgrade from the previous edition, the DD690. It has twice the throughput and capacity, and with the DDX array, the 16 controllers can perform up to 86 TB per hour with 56 PB of usable capacity.

Backup and disaster recovery software:

Gold: CommVault Systems Simpana 8

CommVault's Simpana 8 offers advanced block-level data deduplication, and can dedupe data on tape to reduce the number of archive tapes a company has to maintain. Plus, Simpana 8 can perform deduplication on remote sites and then consolidate all of those deduped results in a database.

Other improvements in Simpana 8 include new data protection features for remote offices and mobile users, continuous data protection (CDP), which captures all writes to disk and then replicates changes back to the data center, deduped data at the remote site can be replicated at the central site and more extended remote data protection.

Silver: Continuity Software's RecoverGuard 4.0

Continuity Software's RecoverGuard 4.0 enhances RecoverGuard's key disaster recovery features with support for high-availability (HA) clustered environments. It can also detect configuration drifts, which is when systems slip out of synch. These new capabilities and features and more easily detect and report vulnerabilities in a system.

Bronze: AppAssure Software Inc.'s Replay 4

AppAssure's Replay 4 is a cloud-based application recovery product, delivering local and cloud-based data recoveries; it takes deduplicated and compressed copies of data to a remote location or cloud storage service. Replay 4 was highly praised for its aim towards the small- to medium-sized (SMB) market. It is both low-cost at $1,079 per server and offers continuous data protection. It's also quick and easy to install.
