Here are the eight finalists in the data backup hardware category in the Storage magazine/SearchStorage.com 2012 Products of the Year competition. The category covers tape libraries, tape drives, backup storage media, disk backup targets, virtual tape libraries, deduplication devices and gateway appliances for cloud backup. Backup hardware finalists are listed in alphabetical order.
Actifio Inc. Protection and Availability Storage 5.0
Actifio Protection and Availability Storage (PAS) 5.0 eliminates redundant silos of data while providing a single virtualized platform that can be used by any application. Enhancements include DeDupe Async replication; Actifio Enterprise Manager for large-scale deployments; support for file-system data on Windows and Linux in direct-attached storage, network-attached storage and SAN environments; and support for in-band, out-of-band, physical, VMware, structured and unstructured environments.
EMC Corp. Data Domain DD990
EMC's Data Domain DD990 deduplication system consolidates backup and archive data on a single system. Its scalable deduplication controller provides up to 31 TB-per-hour performance and supports up to 1.3 PB of usable data. The system's Data Invulnerability Architecture ensures data is stored correctly, with continuous fault detection and self-healing. Its replication feature sends only unique and compressed data over the network.
ExaGrid Systems Inc. EX130-GRID with Secure Erase
The EX130-GRID is a disk-based backup deduplication system that encrypts data via a Deduplication Security System with a Secure Erase function. The product supports up to 130 TB, and holds up to 16 weeks of retention and up to 2.6 PB of logical storage. The Secure Erase capability overwrites affected disk areas so data is no longer accessible, instead of deleting data to create free space on disks.
Oracle Corp. StorageTek SL150 Modular Tape Library
Oracle's StorageTek SL150 modular tape library is a scalable tape library designed specifically for small- and medium-sized businesses (SMBs). The SL150 replaces three products in Oracle's StorageTek tape library portfolio (the SL24, SL48 and SL500), and is the first StorageTek tape library to incorporate Oracle software, including an Oracle Linux OS and Fusion Middleware. Its throughput capability is 10 TB per hour with 20 LTO-5 tape drives.
Riverbed Technology Inc. Whitewater 3010 with Whitewater Operating System 2.0
The Whitewater 3010 appliance allows enterprises to support up to 32 TB of deduplicated local storage and 160 TB of deduplicated cloud storage. The new operating system provides enhanced performance, improvements in cloud operations, stability and compatibility with all existing Whitewater appliances. Whitewater Operating System 2.0 (WWOS 2.0) indexes all data, local and in the cloud, to provide maximum deduplication.
Sepaton Inc. S2100-ES3 Series 2922
Sepaton's S2100-ES3 Series system scales to 2 PB usable capacity in a single system (before dedupe) and ingests at up to 43 TB per hour. Sepaton's DBeXstream database deduplication technology increases backup capacity with support for up to 16 simultaneous database backup/restore channels. DBeXstream handles multiplexed, multistreamed data and can find duplicates in separate parallel backup streams and across multiplexed data volumes.
StorServer Inc. StorServer Enterprise Backup Appliance 3100
The Enterprise Backup Appliance (EBA) 3100 system is the largest model in the StorServer appliance line, offering up to 1 PB of data storage for backup, archive and disaster recovery. It can back up more than 2 billion objects with a single appliance that captures data changes as they happen or on an automated schedule. It supports a broad range of operating systems and hardware platforms, from laptop to mainframe, and across all virtual machines and storage tiers with options for Hyper-V and XenServer.
Symantec Corp. NetBackup 5220 Backup Appliance with NetBackup 7.5 Software
The NetBackup 5220 backup appliance with NetBackup 7.5 software is a unified backup and recovery system that offers data deduplication at both the source and target while sending deduplicated backup directly to storage. It supports 72 TB of usable capacity for non-deduplicated storage and 64 TB of deduplication capacity, and protects up to 4,800 virtual machines in a single system. The system integrates with VMware vStorage APIs for Data Protection to perform direct vSphere backups.
