ADIC takes stake in Overland
Tape library maker ADIC has taken a 9% stake, worth $9 million in Overland Storage Inc., according to recent Securities and Exchange Commission filings. The two companies have also discussed a possible merger, according to the filing. Analysts believe a hookup makes sense long term in consolidating the declining tape business.

StorageTek upgrades mainframe storage
Storage Technology Corp. (StorageTek) unveiled the newest entry in its FlexLine V-Series Shared Virtual Array disk storage family -- the V2X4f for mainframe environments. Customers with existing FlexLine V2Xf systems can upgrade them to 23 terabytes (TB) virtual capacity (from current 11.5 TB) and enhance their performance up to 40% with the new IPX5 processor cards, StorageTek said.

Luminex signs mainframe encryption partnerships
Luminex Software Inc. announced that its Virtual/BLUE 3490 mainframe tape gateway can be combined with both NeoScale Systems Inc.'s CryptoStor and Decru Inc.'s DataFort FC-series encryption appliances to provide direct-to-tape encryption of mainframe data.

McData offers OpenTrunking for FICON
McData Corp. announced that its OpenTrunking load-balancing software will work with IBM System z9 and eServer zSeries mainframes running Enterprise Operating System 8.0. The firmware upgrade is now available and qualified for use with IBM's FICON zSeries server line or in IBM FICON environments using McData's FICON management server.

Vaulting service chooses Asigra
Backup service provider DS3 DataVaulting selected Asigra Inc.'s backup and recovery software for more than 100 TB of customer data. The software scans backup data for corrupted files.

University of California chooses OnStor
OnStor Inc. announced that its Bobcat NAS gateway was selected by the University of California, Merced, over a Network Appliance Inc. solution. The university, opened just a few years ago, said it expects its storage requirements to grow to hundreds of terabytes in the near future. The Bobcat scales from 1 TB to 40,000 TB of capacity.

Emulex HBAs compatible with HP management software
Emulex Corp.'s LightPulse host bus adapters for Windows and Linux have been tested and certified for use with the new Hewlett-Packard Co. (HP) Systems Insight Manager 5.0 management software, the companies announced.

Exanet unveils NAS-based uncompressed HDTV storage
Exanet Inc. will demonstrate play out of uncompressed high-definition television (HDTV) data through its ExaStore software at the International Broadcasting Conference in Amsterdam, Netherlands Sept. 9-13. The need for uncompressed HDTV is now becoming a mainstream requirement for the film, broadcast and video postproduction industry, the company said.

Data Domain granted patent
Data Domain announced that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has granted it patent number 6,928,526 for its DD400 disk backup appliances. Data Domain said it has 10 more patents pending for its appliances.
