Metalogix expands StoragePoint automated backup, retention functions

Metalogix has announced the latest version of StoragePoint includes expanded automated backup and retention capabilities for the SharePoint platform.

Metalogix has announced that the latest version of its StoragePoint product includes expanded automated backup and retention capabilities for the SharePoint platform.

According to Washington, D.C.-based Metalogix, StoragePoint 4.2's new integrated SharePoint backup offers an automated backup and granular recovery function. The company said the backup is conducted from within SharePoint and eliminates the need for a third-party backup.

Metalogix claimed more than 7,500 customers use its products to manage content on Microsoft's SharePoint, Exchange and Cloud platforms.

The company said StoragePoint's use of remote binary large object (BLOB) storage to move unstructured content from SQL Server to other storage tiers allows content databases to be shrunk by up to 95% and improves the speed of backups. The company claimed that without StoragePoint it could take up to eight hours to back up about 1 TB of content.

Metalogix said StoragePoint compresses BLOBs to reduce storage needs, which also reduces the network bandwidth necessary to move content to cloud storage for data that is infrequently accessed.

This functionality is available through a single user interface in the SharePoint central administration. Metalogix said StoragePoint includes the ability to perform item-level restores, as well.

The product also includes what Metalogix said is expanded retention capabilities with an added ability to synchronize between SharePoint's information management policies and outside storage platforms, such as EMC Centera.

The company said StoragePoint encrypts content during transmission and storage with 256-bit AES encryption.

Metalogix also announced it released StoragePoint Express, a free version of the product that comes with a one-year license and offers some of the functionality of StoragePoint 4.2 with the ability to manage up to 200 GB of content. StoragePoint Express lacks some of the features available to users of the full version of the software, including support for files larger than 2 GB, migration of BLOBs between endpoints, archival of BLOBs by metadata, an endpoint capacity monitor and the ability to manage multiple endpoints for each profile.

A copy of StoragePoint Express can be downloaded from the Metalogix website.

StoragePoint 4.2 is compatible with SharePoint Server 2013 and SharePoint Foundation 2013 running on Windows 2008 R2 Server or Windows 2012 Server; SharePoint Server 2010 and SharePoint Foundation 2010 running on Windows 2008 Server, Windows 2008 R2 Server or Windows 2012 Server; and WSS 3.0 and MOSS 2007 running on Windows 2003 or 2008 Server.
