Odaseva introduces Vault for long-term Salesforce backup

Odaseva launched Vault, a Salesforce backup product that lets customers store their sensitive data in an encrypted long-term retention layer that's still readily accessible.

Odaseva has added long-term archiving to its Salesforce backup capabilities.

Odaseva Vault is for sensitive data. The Vault runs on the Odaseva cloud data protection platform, which extracts data from Salesforce, replicates it for backup and then pushes it back onto Salesforce. At the extraction step, customers have the option to send the data to the Vault.

Odaseva CEO Sovan Bin said the Vault is designed to store data for decades, with features guarding against unauthorized access and data corruption. It includes "self-healing" measures to ensure that data taken out is exactly the same as when it went in.

"When you send data to Odaseva Vault, it will have additional layers on top of the backup and replication," Bin said. "Behind the scenes, we are replicating the data across multiple servers, we are checking the integrity of the files, and whenever we detect one problem of integrity in one of the copies, we correct it."

Compliance and encryption emphasis stands out

Additional compliance-related features distinguish Vault from regular Salesforce backup. Access control, login tracking and granular encryption are all included in Vault, which Bin said targets customers in the financial, healthcare and insurance industries.

Christophe Bertrand, senior analyst at Enterprise Strategy Group, said the focus on compliance is Odaseva's big differentiator among vendors who offer Salesforce archiving, including CloudAlly, DBSync and Archive360. Salesforce even has native archiving features, but it takes more effort and expertise than most enterprises can cost-effectively spare to put together something that is secure, reliable and easily audited. Odaseva Vault has built-in anti-corruption, access control and access logging to address all of those points.

Data stored in the Odaseva Vault cannot be modified until it's been taken out.

"I believe that their focus on encryption is absolutely key," Bertrand said of Odaseva. "Backup and archiving APIs exist in Salesforce, but they are not sufficient on their own without a lot of service expertise and custom development."

Bertrand also said Odaseva Vault's granular encryption means even if someone gained the credentials to access the Vault, the data would be encrypted.

The reason for setting up multiple tiers of storage is to push infrequently accessed data to slower, cheaper storage media. This "cold" data takes longer to restore. But Odaseva promises quick retrieval of archived data.

We have decided to challenge the traditional approach and make that 'cold' data already 'warm' and ready to be downloaded anytime.

"We have decided to challenge the traditional approach and make that 'cold' data already 'warm' and ready to be downloaded anytime," Bin said. "We have designed our architecture to optimize the cost on our end. The priority was to make the data instantly available for our customers."

Odaseva Vault is available now and is priced by storage capacity. Customers subscribed to Odaseva Enterprise Data Protection Edition will get Vault at no additional cost, but subscribers to Odaseva's Data Compliance Cloud and Essentials product packages will need to pay an additional license fee.

Vault allows customers to control when data is automatically purged. Bin pointed out that given the product's price is storage-based, it's an important feature to help ensure customers aren't paying for retaining data longer than necessary.
