Backup software vendor Commvault is throwing its support behind the Nutanix Acropolis Hypervisor launched last year by hyper-converged vendor Nutanix.
Commvault support and integration of the Nutanix hypervisor, announced this month, joins support already available for VMware vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V. Commvault maintains it is the only data protection software platform integrated with all major hypervisors available.
Unlike vSphere and Hyper-V, Acropolis is only used with Nutanix hyper-converged technology. But hyper-convergence is rapidly growing in the data center.
"Having that hypervisor choice is critical," said Brian Allison, vice president of worldwide alliances at Commvault. Allison said Commvault support for multiple hypervisors is important as customers scale and grow hyper-converged environments, especially for enterprise applications.
The Commvault support and integration brings enhanced data protection and recovery to hyper-converged customers using Nutanix Acropolis, according to Allison.
"Customers can really speed the recovery process as well as make the backup process nearly invisible," said Don Foster, senior director of product management at Commvault.

The integration provides customers with the ability to optimize costs by leveraging the most appropriate hypervisor, reducing risk and effort in scalable and high-performance offerings, according to Commvault. It includes Commvault IntelliSnap snapshot management capabilities to simplify protection and recovery for data and virtual machines running on Nutanix.
"This is more than just data protection. It extends into the actual life cycle," for example in test/dev environments, said Sachin Chheda, senior director of solutions marketing at Nutanix.
Nutanix is in the business of making infrastructure invisible for data centers, Chheda said.
Basic Commvault support for Nutanix Acropolis is available now for select customers, with more advanced integration due in early 2016. The integration also features application consistency across a range of enterprise applications, including Exchange and SQL Server, and minimizes backup windows through snapshot management without scripting.
The Commvault-Nutanix partnership stretches back about 18 months. Allison noted the companies' common vision of invisible infrastructure and said he's hoping they're just getting started with their collaborative work.
It's a "great foundation" from which to build up, said Venugopal Pai, vice president of alliances and business development at Nutanix.
"Commvault has been very valuable for us," Pai said.
