EMC World 2016: With eCDM, vendor addresses copy sprawl

With rollouts at EMC World 2016, Enterprise Copy Data Management and ViPR 3.0 extend EMC's software-defined storage push into copy sprawl and heterogeneous storage support.

LAS VEGAS -- EMC moved into the burgeoning copy data management market this week with software designed to fight "copy sprawl" by finding and managing multiple instances of data.

EMC Enterprise Copy Data Management (eCDM) enables automated search across EMC storage arrays and disk backup targets to find copies of the same data. Customers can use it to scan storage in a single local data center or analyze aggregate results across geographically dispersed EMC storage. EMC launched eCDM at EMC World 2016.

The eCDM presents backup copies, snapshots, replicas and versions in a copy data map, including the arrays on which they reside and how much capacity is being consumed. EMC is starting with support for VMAX All Flash and XtremIO all-flash arrays and Data Domain backup, with support for the new Unity platform scheduled to be added next. EMC plans to eventually expand eCDM for use with other vendors' hardware.

EMC Enterprise Copy Data Analytics, an analytics as a service offering, complements eCDM by providing predictive guidance for capacity planning.

"You can discover what's in place and monitor or manage against that with your own custom-designed protection plans," said Caitlin Gordon, product marketing director for EMC's core technologies division.

EMC said eCDM will be generally available later this year. Pricing has not been set.

EMC joins copy data management bandwagon

The copy data management market has been dominated by startups such as Actifio and Catalogic Software, although Hitachi Data Systems has a Hitachi Data Instance Director.

Jason Buffington, a senior analyst at Enterprise Strategy Group Inc., in Milford, Mass., said copy data management is a thorny problem fueled in part by backup technologies that make it easy to create multiple versions.

"Every data protection vendor needs to be evolving to address the copy data management problem," Buffington said. "What we've seen up to now, as is typical of the industry, is that whenever a new problem needs to be solved, it's always a startup that solves it first.

"The Enterprise Copy Data Management now becomes an additional feature of EMC's data protection portfolio. I think eventually you'll see other large storage vendors evolve in this space as well."

ViPR 3.0 among key releases

Other EMC World 2016 software releases were built on products already in the market. ViPR 3.O is built on CoprHD application code that appeared in the first open source version of ViPR at EMC World 2015. ViPR 3.0 helps manage EMC storage, as well as 50 non-EMC storage vendor platforms. With ViPR 3.0, EMC added a software development kit to enable organizations to broaden support to any type of hardware they use.

"The reality is, it's a heterogeneous world and we understand that," said Varun Chhabra, a director of product marketing with EMC's emerging technologies division. "We'll never be able to support every platform our customers use, but we want to give them the option to write a ViPR driver if their specific storage hardware isn't supported out of the box."

Chhabra said ViPR 3.0 also adds disaster recovery capabilities, eliminating the need for VMware SRDM or other tools of previous iterations.

Other software rollouts at EMC World include:

  • Project LEAP for developing cloud-based content management applications;
  • InfoArchive for archiving of unstructured and structured data on compliant-critical databases; and
  • Open source EMC Polly for integrating storage scheduling with container runtime engines.
