Data backup and recovery software: 2016 Products of the Year finalists

While the cloud is a steady presence, the backup and disaster recovery software finalists provide a variety of capabilities across technologies and platforms.

The 11 finalists in the data backup and recovery software and services category of the 2016 Storage magazine/SearchStorage Products of the Year competition span a wide range of data protection products.

Convergence of data protection technologies and multi-platform capabilities are key, as customers seek all-in-one products. And the finalists reflect how the cloud has grown into an important role in backup and disaster recovery software.

Products eligible for consideration in the category include backup and recovery software, cloud backup and recovery services, disaster recovery, snapshot and replication, electronic vaulting and archivers.

Acronis Backup 12 / Acronis Backup Advanced 11.7

Acronis Backup, geared toward small businesses, converges cloud and on-premises backup and recovery, protecting all the data in customers' IT environments using a unified web console. The data backup and recovery software also features virtual host backup for VMware ESXi and Microsoft Hyper-V, a hybrid cloud architecture and instant restore that can reduce recovery time objectives to seconds.

Catalogic ECX 2.4

The Catalogic ECX 2.4 application provides in-place copy data management by taking control of the copy functions -- including snapshots and replication -- of enterprise storage arrays from EMC, IBM, NetApp and Pure Storage and integrating them with applications and hypervisors. ECX is the first copy data management application to support EMC Unity arrays, and also supports Oracle, Microsoft SQL and Amazon Web Services.

Commvault Data Platform V11

The Commvault Data Platform is enterprise-level data backup and recovery software that handles traditional backup, archive and reporting, and manages virtual infrastructure across hypervisors and cloud platforms. It can initiate replication automatically after backups or on a scheduled basis, and its application-aware backup provides granular recovery of applications inside a virtual machine.

Datos IO RecoverX

RecoverX is multi-platform, multi-cloud data backup and recovery software built for cloud and high-scale applications such as the internet of things and software as a service, as well as non-relational databases. The product enables scalable versioning for flexible backups, any-point-in-time recovery, and semantic deduplication to protect, recover and manage application workloads deployed on-premises, in the cloud and across multi-cloud environments.

Datto SIRIS 3

Datto SIRIS is designed for SMBs to protect physical and virtual environments on every major hypervisor and operating system in use today. Data is continuously backed up to a local SIRIS device and synchronized with Datto's own 250 PB cloud. The product allows users to run applications locally on the SIRIS device or in the cloud, and gives users everything they need for DRaaS.

Druva Phoenix

The Druva Phoenix product is a cloud-first service that unifies backup, disaster recovery and archiving for physical and virtual servers. Its data tiering moves data between hot, warm and cold storage according to a schedule, letting organizations take advantage of less expensive storage. Through global deduplication, only changed data is captured and sent to the cloud, reducing storage and bandwidth.

HotLink Managed DRaaS

HotLink Managed DRaaS joins the low-cost, pay-as-you-go, unlimited scalability of Amazon Web Services together with well-integrated, fully-managed BC/DR. The new product features continuous monitoring, testing and reporting of customers' BC/DR workloads, file servers and databases, as well as restoration of business operations in AWS within minutes of an on-premises failure.

Unitrends Enterprise Backup 9.0

Unitrends Enterprise Backup is an all-in-one virtual appliance for vSphere, Hyper-V or XenServer, or installable software for Linux. It features adaptive data deduplication to speed backups and maximize the use of backup storage, and offers a variety of companion cloud options, ranging from full-service DRaaS to integration with public clouds like Amazon Web Services.

Veeam Availability Suite v9

The latest version of Veeam Availability Suite data backup and recovery software includes Veeam Cloud Connect replication, which ensures availability of mission-critical applications with integrated, fast and secure cloud-based disaster recovery through a service provider. The product's scale-out backup repository enables creation of a single virtual storage pool for backups from almost any storage device.

Zerto Virtual Replication 4.5

Zerto Virtual Replication addresses the needs of enterprise-class workloads, protecting multi-terabyte virtual machines with recovery point objectives of seconds, across hypervisors and clouds. The new Journal File Level Recovery feature enables the restoration of any file from a point in time just seconds before a deletion, virus or corruption, reducing the impact of data loss.

Zetta Disaster Recovery 1.0

Zetta Disaster Recovery is geared toward companies who lack a secondary DR site but require failover in less than five minutes. The product also features pre-provisioned virtual VPN and firewall for on-demand access to applications running in the Zetta Cloud, as well as DR testing to validate that systems and applications will be operational during a disaster.
