EMC Enterprise Copy Data Management sneak peek

EMC Enterprise Copy Data Management is another example of a major company pushing into a space that has previously been dominated mostly by smaller startup companies.

Caitlin Gordon, director of product marketing at EMC, presented a demo of the product on the EMC World convention floor. Carol Sliwa, a senior writer in TechTarget’s Storage Media Group, filmed the information for our readers.

ECDM is able to search through storage devices to find multiple copies of data. These data copies, often called copy data, include backup copies and snapshots. Presenting a specific instance of data, Gordon noted that there were "a lot of copies on the VMAX, but I'm not fully protected because I don't have any copies on the Data Domain." She then showed how EMC Enterprise Copy Data Management can find multiple, differing versions of a file across separate storage systems. This capability allows a user to discover the exact arrays holding a specific piece of data and how much total capacity that piece of data uses.

EMC eCDM also offers data protection plans that are "fully customizable." When deciding on the level of protection required for a specific piece of data, Gordon said, users can customize specifics such as "recovery point, storage class, retention [and] the number of copies."

Another of the product's marketing points is its ability to find and reduce the number of redundant files on a system while maintaining complete data protection. On its website, EMC claims that 45% to 60% of total storage capacity is dedicated to copies. Therefore, reducing the amount of redundant data in a computing environment could be a major cost saving opportunity for businesses.

Gordon also previewed Enterprise Copy Data Analytics, which is part of EMC's eCDM portfolio. Gordon said eCDA "is a cloud-based analytics engine and a service offering" that allows users to "see across all your sites, globally." Users can not only manage local storage systems, but storage across all of a company's locations from one central console.

Copy data management has largely been a field controlled by smaller businesses. Although IBM partnered with Catalogic to address copy data management, EMC is relatively unique as a major company developing its own tools to control copy data. Consumers will have to see if EMC offers notable advantages over already established competitors. At the moment, EMC is only offering the product to those already in its customer base. EMC Enterprise Copy Data Management runs with VMAX, XtremIO and Data Domain offerings, but EMC said it plans to add support to hardware from other vendors.

Hi, I'm Caitlin Gordon, director of product marketing at EMC. Today, I'm really excited to give you a demo of our new offering, EMC Enterprise Copy Data Management or eCDM.

We'll start here, on the dashboard. You can see the status of things like application protection, compliance by plan. I'll highlight the fact that the Silver plan is 0% in compliance, and we'll talk more about what that means later.

So let's just start with looking at the assets eCDM has already discovered. When we talk about assets, we mean storage or protection storage assets, and the copies that reside within them. These are the existing copies already in the environment, so that could be within a VMAX storage group, those are SnapVX copies. [It] could [also] be within an XtremIO consistency group, and these are XVC [XtremIO Virtual Copies] copies.

So let's go back to the VMAX storage group. What we're going to do is look more specifically at one of these storage groups to see what those copies look like. We can see that we have a number of different copies on the VMAX. And one thing I notice here is that I do have a lot of copies on the VMAX, but I'm not fully protected because I don't have any copies on the Data Domain. So I want to do something about that.

What I can do about that is apply a protection plan. These protection plans are something I defined ahead of time; they're fully customizable. I call these Gold, Silver and Bronze, but you could call them anything. You can define them for different departments, [and] for different tenants.

I want to look at the Silver plan. I think that is probably what I want to do because I know I want a protection copy on the Data Domain. If we look at the specifics of that protection plan, we can see that it was defined with completely customized SLOs, including recovery point, storage class, retention [and] the number of copies. This plan looks good, so we're going to go ahead and apply this plan to that storage group. You can see that it's running right now, and that running could be doing two things. It could be monitoring just to see if we're meeting those SLOs, but what we're actually doing here is actively managing against that.

So if we go back and look at that storage group we had before, you have the point-in-time copies you had before, but we've also now added a copy on Data Domain. So now I'm fully protected. Under the covers, what we've actually done is use ProtectPoint to create a backup copy directly from VMAX to the Data Domain. So now I'm fully protected on that site.

What you can also do here is see these copies and their relationship. But what if I want to access the copy on the Data Domain, natively from that copy data map? I can do that recovery and reuse right from the interface. Just select the server I want to make that accessible to, and this is going to enable the DBA to use that copy for testing, dev, analytics, anything he wants to. So you can see now that there's been one copy exported directly from the Data Domain.

Now if we go back up here, we can see that our dashboard has changed. Our Silver plan that started at 0% compliance is now 100%, because we've applied that Silver plan, and validated and managed the copies to ensure that we're meeting those SLOs.

Now this was eCDM, this was within the data center, your protection and your capacity. What if I want to take that a step further and see what we can do across sites? That's what eCDA can do. ECDA is EMC's Enterprise Copy Data Analytics. This is a cloud-based analytics engine and a service offering that allows you to see across all your sites, globally, all your data centers, exactly what is happening with the compliance against your protection plans that you've defined.

There's two ways to look at a city. I can click on Los Angeles here, for example. I can see my protection plans, my capacity utilization, what that looks like within that city. What if I want to know what's going on in Boston? Just zoom back out here. And then we can see that within this map, not only can you see the status overall, you could specifically just see the status of protection within that site. So now I can see where there are some hotspots that I might want to do some optimization within, and this gives you a global view. Again this is a cloud-based analytics engine, which is the analytics service as part of eCDM.
